Generative engine optimization: be visible when AI answers.

Backed by evidence, not claims.

More and more people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews instead of clicking through lists of results. KULIMO makes sure your website can be considered as a source there: technically accessible, clearly identifiable as a business, with content that can be cited. No ranking guarantees and no hype — built on what Google and OpenAI document themselves.

What GEO is

GEO is SEO — with a new reader

AI is reading along.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) covers everything that makes a website suitable as a source for AI-generated answers. Google itself says that the AI features in Google Search rely on the same ranking and quality systems as classic search. So if you do good SEO, you’re laying the foundation.

The difference lies in the result: instead of ten blue links, AI names a few sources — or none at all. What counts, then, is content built on first-hand experience and verifiable statements, a clearly identifiable business, and a website that search and AI crawlers are actually allowed to read.

How we approach classic SEO, local SEO, and GEO together is explained on our SEO & GEO Agency Berlin page. This page covers the AI side in detail.

Four levers

What the evidence says matters

No secret tricks — just four things that follow from Google’s and OpenAI’s documentation and from research.

01

Technical access

Googlebot, OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot, and other search crawlers must be allowed to fetch your pages. According to OpenAI, websites that block OAI-SearchBot don’t appear in ChatGPT’s search answers. A common cause: a firewall or CDN setting that blocks “AI bots” across the board. Also important: content that is readable without JavaScript.

02

A clear entity

Your business needs the same name and the same description everywhere: website, legal notice (Impressum), Google Business Profile, directories, social profiles. Structured data of type Organization or LocalBusiness with links to these profiles helps search engines identify you unambiguously.

03

Citable content

Answer first, then the reasoning. First-hand experience, concrete figures with sources, clear responsibilities. In GEO research, citing sources, adding quotations, and adding statistics improved visibility in AI answers the most — with large differences by topic.

04

Genuine mentions

Trade media, industry directories, reviews, and partnerships that actually exist. Google explicitly stresses that artificially generated mentions don’t help. A well-maintained Google Business Profile, on the other hand, also counts for AI answers.

Myths

What GEO services promise — and what’s actually true

“You need an llms.txt.”Google states that additional machine-readable files aren’t needed for the AI features in Google Search and neither hurt nor help. We set up an llms.txt on request — as an offering for other systems, not as a ranking lever.
“Content has to be chopped into AI-sized chunks.”According to Google, that isn’t necessary. Well-structured pages with clear headings help people and machines alike — artificial fragmenting doesn’t.
“With schema markup, you’ll appear in AI answers.”Structured data isn’t a requirement for AI features. It still makes sense, though: for rich results and for a clear picture of your business.
“We guarantee the top spot in ChatGPT.”AI answers aren’t deterministic; they vary by question, location, and history. Anyone who promises guarantees is promising something nobody controls.
“A hundred AI-written texts a month will bring visibility.”Interchangeable mass content is exactly what AI systems have no need to cite. What’s in demand is what only you know.

Measuring

How we measure AI visibility

  • Prompt sets instead of single questions: the questions your customers actually ask — in German and English, run multiple times, because answers fluctuate.
  • Mentioned, cited, or not mentioned: we distinguish whether your business merely appears or is linked as a source — and how competitors perform.
  • Search Console: Google provides a dedicated performance report for generative AI features. It shows how people find your content through AI features in Search and Discover.
  • Server logs: which crawlers actually fetch your pages — and which get stuck at the firewall or CDN.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about GEO

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimization: everything that makes a website suitable as a source for AI-generated answers — technical access, unambiguous business data, citable content, and genuine mentions.

What’s the difference between SEO and GEO?

According to Google, the AI features in Search rely on the same systems as classic search. So GEO builds on SEO and adds a focus on whether and how AI answers name and link to your business.

Can you guarantee that we’ll appear in ChatGPT?

No. AI answers vary by question, location, and history, and no one outside the providers controls them. We create the conditions and measure transparently what changes.

Do we need an llms.txt?

Not for Google Search: Google states that such files neither hurt nor help. We set one up on request, but we don’t sell it as a visibility lever.

Why doesn’t our website show up in ChatGPT?

Common reasons: OAI-SearchBot is blocked in robots.txt or by a firewall, content isn’t readable without JavaScript, your business is described inconsistently, or there’s no content that answers a specific question.

What role does structured data play?

According to Google, it isn’t a requirement for AI features. But it helps identify your business unambiguously and remains the basis for rich results.

How long does it take before anything changes?

Technical fixes take effect as soon as crawlers fetch the pages again. Content and mentions take longer. We measure at fixed intervals and report what is actually moving.

What does GEO cost at KULIMO?

For new websites, GEO is part of the project — websites start at €1,270 at a fixed price. Audit and ongoing support for existing websites come at a fixed price after the free intro call.
