The situation
The new website has been decided, but one question holds everyone up: what happens to the Google rankings built up over years? You’ve heard of relaunches after which visitor numbers collapsed – and you don’t want to live through that yourself.
Typical before the start: nobody knows exactly which pages bring visitors and enquiries today, which backlinks point where and which URLs will change. Add a new CMS, a new structure – sometimes a new domain as well.
Our solution
We start with the inventory: rankings and clicks from Search Console, top pages, backlinks, conversion paths, technology and content. That gives a list of what stays and what can go. In the new structure every old URL gets a target – every URL with rankings or backlinks a 301 redirect to the best-matching new page, not a blanket redirect to the homepage.
Valuable content is revised or merged, never silently removed; titles, descriptions, canonicals and schema are set deliberately, and the staging environment stays on noindex. After go-live we monitor crawl errors, 404 spikes, rankings and clicks of the top pages and form submissions for four weeks.
Website relaunch in detailProcess & details
Seven phases, each with your sign-off:
- 01Inventory
- 02Strategy & structure
- 03Design & UX
- 04Technology & development
- 05Content migration
- 06Launch QA & go-live
- 07Monitoring & fine-tuning
On launch day: remove noindex, put robots.txt live, test redirects by sample and automatically, submit the XML sitemap to Search Console, check tracking, SSL, hreflang and the 404 page, keep a backup of the old version. Go-live preferably not on a Friday.

Frequently asked questions
What belongs on a website relaunch checklist?
Before launch: a complete URL inventory and redirect table, secured top content and backlink targets, metadata set, staging on noindex, forms and tracking tested. On launch day: remove noindex, test redirects, submit the sitemap. The full checklist is in our guide.
How do I keep my rankings in a relaunch?
With a 301 redirect for every old URL with rankings or backlinks to the best-matching new page, deliberately set metadata and monitoring after go-live. Short-term fluctuations are normal; lasting losses come from avoidable mistakes.
What should I watch out for when changing domain?
The same principle applies: every old URL needs a redirect to its new target, the new sitemap goes into Search Console, and external listings such as your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles need updating. We go through the details in the intro call.
Should we relaunch in stages?
For large websites we often recommend switching technology and templates first and then moving content section by section. For smaller websites a single go-live is usually simpler.
Do we need a technical SEO audit before the relaunch?
The inventory is exactly that: rankings and clicks, top pages, backlinks, technology and content are captured before the rebuild – without that baseline nothing can be compared after launch.
Plan the relaunch before the first URL disappears.
15 minutes, free, no obligation. Afterwards you know what the inventory involves and when the relaunch can go live.
