Must your website be accessible? We check it – and fix it.

The German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) has applied since 28 June 2025. Our self-test gives a first assessment in four questions; the audit tests your website by hand to WCAG 2.1 AA.

01

The situation

You’ve heard about the BFSG and don’t know whether it applies to your website. Do you sell online, take bookings, is a plugin that promises “accessibility in one click” enough – and what happens if it isn’t?

The most common barriers are unspectacular: weak colour contrast, images and icons without alt text, menus, sliders and pop-ups that can’t be used with a keyboard, forms without visible labels – and cookie banners that can’t be closed with a keyboard.

02

Our solution

The BFSG implements the European Accessibility Act. It covers consumer offers via websites and apps aimed at concluding a contract – such as online shops and booking flows. Micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees that also stay below the turnover or balance-sheet threshold are exempt for services. Whether and which pages are affected, we clarify in the free intro call – this does not replace legal advice.

In practice the benchmark is WCAG 2.1 AA. We test your key journeys by hand – keyboard, screen reader, zoom and forms – fix barriers in code and design instead of with an overlay, and finish with the accessibility information. For new KULIMO websites, WCAG 2.1 AA is part of the project anyway.

Process & details

Five steps from assessment to an accessible website:

  1. 01Applicability & scope
  2. 02Automated scan
  3. 03Manual testing
  4. 04Prioritised report
  5. 05Implementation, retest, statement

For a first assessment, answer four questions in the BFSG self-test on our website – it runs in your browser and stores nothing. We use the automated scan only as a quick overview; the manual testing is what counts. On outdated systems a relaunch can make more sense than patching.

Questions from search

Frequently asked questions

  • Does my website need to be accessible?

If your website lets consumers conclude a contract – for example in an online shop or a booking flow – the offer generally falls under the BFSG; micro-enterprises are exempt for services. This is a first orientation, not legal advice: if in doubt, have your individual case reviewed by a lawyer.

  • Since when has the BFSG applied – is there a transition period?

Since 28 June 2025. The transitional rule until 2030 mainly covers products and contracts concluded earlier and, according to the prevailing view, is not a grace period for websites.

  • Does the BFSG also apply to B2B websites?

The law targets consumers. According to the widespread view, purely B2B offers are not covered as long as consumers are clearly excluded – if in doubt, get legal advice.

  • Is an accessibility plugin or overlay enough?

No. Overlays don’t change the source code: missing labels, wrong structure and keyboard traps remain. Conformance only comes from fixes in code and design.

  • How do I make my website BFSG-compliant?

Clarify applicability, test against WCAG 2.1 AA – automated and by hand – fix barriers by priority, retest and publish an accessibility statement. We take care of these steps; they don’t replace a legal assessment of your individual case.
